clapping in the nosebleeds

okay, full transparency. i have tons of favorite songs & artists & bands, and the thought of having to make a careful and meaningful choice as to which one should be my first post was totally overwhelming, so instead i’m choosing one that carries little meaning, no sentimentality, some joy, a lot (a lot!) of drums, but not much else.

imagine fucking dragons, y’all! okay, i really do like listening to this song. i can vividly imagine this crew sitting around just yelling boom three times in between some random utterances and everyone getting really excited and high-fiving and clinking mugs of 7up or whatever imagine dragons drink and having the time of their lives. i don’t know shit about the songwriting process but i can picture this so clearly and it makes me so happy.

i also love how goddamn bitter this song is. here we have someone who is living the dream of being a bonafide rockstar, and they choose to write a very basic song about how they did it (they fucking did it!) but others doubted them at one point. oh, did they boss? you’re kidding. i’m sure reading the lyrics to this song at the time would have totally proved them wrong. and now they’ve got shitty seats to hear you sing the simplest-ass song in a huge venue that has shitty nosebleed seats! oh, and did i mention that they are clapping? clapping! is that what people do at imagine dragons concerts after songs? they hear this banger and then they clap like it’s the 14th green at augusta national? what is happening? also, let all the vitriol for your adoleescent doubters fucking go, boss. also, holy shit we don’t live in a meritocracy. i really do love this song though.

but, wait. the booms! i love them. i really do. i wish i could give presentations at work with this instrumental playing in the background. just on low volume. or maybe starting on low volume and just getting louder and louder as i click through some slides. like, to the point that my conclusion is totally inaudible with all the booms. ANYWAY. i also just love how the word thunder comes across 43,980 times in a song that clocks in just over 3min. if you asked me how many times i could say the word thunder in a day i would’ve estimated less than in this song. i fucking love it.

okay, first song of the day. is it good? not sure. does it make me happy? so happy! was this the right first choice? god fucking no, but that’s why it was. confused? me too.
