you could be my remedy

the basic premise here is these are all songs that i love, and that i think you might love it as well. so to start off any of these little narratives with how i feel about a song feels a little repetitive. unnecessary. dismissive. obvious.

all that being said, i love this song! these guys aren’t just fucking around to see what feels good. there’s a refreshing clarity here. it feels like everything in there has a purpose, and they could’ve gone crazy with synths or vocals or more percussion or whatever, but they didn’t.

to wit: that little 15 second stretch after her first vocal that starts at 1:12 is perfect, in my opinion. it’s indulgent without being extravagant. it’s not showy but it’s deeply interesting, and emotional.

the choice to tonally switch between the somberness of his stanzas (in the end, we did all the damage that you could want / but the emptiness will go on, and on) and the uplift of hers (and you could be my remedy / if you could show me love) matches up perfectly. he’s given up, she’s still hopeful. you could listen to this without the lyrics and paint the same picture. i love it.

i’m going to have to start making rules to avoid just picking chvrches or metric songs everyday. i hereby pledge to not pick a song from the same artist within three fortnights, so if you like chvrches like me but hate this little project set yourself a reminder to come back for a visit in roundabout 43 days.
