this was a bonus track on what i think is a truly remarkable album, but i don’t know how this song got banished to bonus track island. because, & i don’t know how to put this delicately, this is an amazing song.
let’s get the weaknesses out of the way, first. or the one weakness, at least. yes, the enunciation. it’s awful. you could give me the actual lyrics sheet or the lunch menu from red robin and tell me to follow along and i would have trouble knowing which one is more accurate. there’s a point about 40s in when alex ounsworth apparently sings “heaven,” but does he? no way. stop it.
but the build up, though! there’s this break that you know something is up, and then something is definitely up. i’m going to leave it there as is, but if i may share a suggestion: just give in! don’t worry about whether he’s singing “soul” or “sword” (it’s sword, by the way). it doesn’t matter! just take it in. turn it up. sing along. play some finger drums. do whatever! it’s chaotic, but it’s so so wonderful.
